Taking a Year Off from a Career?
I’m about to start college, and I’m kinda starting to plan ahead for the future. At some point in my life, I want to live somewhere like Portland, OR and work in a coffee shop for minimum wage and live in a commune and row my own vegetables and not have to worry about things. Or maybe I could even travel the world on foot or something, I haven’t worked out the specifics. Eventually, I’d like to settle down, but it’s just something I want to experience and be able to tell my kids about or whatever. I’m going to school for advertising, and it would be convenient to do this like the year after I graduate college. Is this a big risk career wise? Will I miss out on internships and job offers and whatnot if I do this? Will I forget everything I learn? Has anyone done this, or know someone who has? Any advice you can give me is great. Thanks!
It certainly won’t HURT your career, but it will probably delay your career path. So while you watch peers who did not take the time off, they may be further along or have more progress in their career. If anything, just be prepared to accept that fact and know that they will be more progressed than you might be in your career.
Something to consider (as I am also a member) to help you in your travels is “couchsurfing”.
The cool part about this is you can meet a lot of great people form all over the world, and since you are surfing couches, you also avoid the added costs of places to stay. You do have to establish yourself in the community, but once you have done this, you will find that “couchsurfing” is a great way to travel the world and do all the things you are wanting to do, and have the stories and pictures to tell your kids. I have had some great experiences so far doing this, and ti definitely creates for some interesting experiences and allows you to usually see things from a local perspective that you would not be able to see otherwise.
I have met many people who have done this, and one of my connections on couchsurfing is actually about to take 2 years off of school and is quitting her job to do just this. She is going to use couchsurfing to help her in her effort, so it will be neat to read about her travels. My brother does the same thing and is actually going to be in Europe for the next two years starting in August. I love reading and learning about his many adventures!
